PU stone is a lightweight polyurethane (PU) wall panel that reproduces the look and texture of natural stone, brick and wood. It is made from rigid polyurethane foam with a durable surface coating, which makes it much lighter than real stone while retaining a realistic surface. PU stone panels are widely used for interior feature walls, exterior facades and commercial cladding because they are waterproof, fire-retardant and easy to install.
Key Facts
- ◆PU stone is made from rigid polyurethane foam with a realistic stone-texture surface coating.
- ◆It is approximately 80% lighter than natural stone, reducing structural load and shipping cost.
- ◆PU stone panels are waterproof, fire-retardant and moisture-proof, suitable for bathrooms and kitchens.
- ◆Panels are installed with adhesive or mechanical fixing and can be cut with standard woodworking tools.
- ◆NexaDBS offers 7 PU stone series with 119 products and 940+ colorways.
How PU Stone Is Made
PU stone panels are manufactured by injecting rigid polyurethane foam into a mold that carries a real-stone texture. After the foam cures, a protective surface coating is applied to create the final color and texture. Because the mold is taken from natural stone, each panel reproduces the grain, pores and relief of the original material with high fidelity.
The result is a panel that looks like quarried stone but weighs a fraction of it. A typical 1200×600 mm PU panel weighs only a few kilograms, which means it can be handled by a single installer and fixed directly to most wall surfaces without additional structural reinforcement.
Key Properties of PU Stone
- Lightweight: roughly 80% lighter than natural stone, so it is easy to cut, carry and install.
- Waterproof: closed-cell foam does not absorb water, making it suitable for bathrooms and kitchens.
- Fire-retardant: PU stone meets common fire-retardant requirements for interior wall cladding.
- Moisture-proof: resistant to mold and mildew in high-humidity environments.
- UV-resistant: surface coating resists fading in exterior applications.
- Easy installation: can be cut with a utility knife or saw and fixed with adhesive.
PU Stone vs Real Stone
| Property | PU Stone | Natural Stone |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Very light, no reinforcement needed | Heavy, requires structural support |
| Cost | Lower material and labor cost | Higher material and installation cost |
| Installation | Adhesive, cut with standard tools | Mortar and skilled masonry labor |
| Water resistance | Waterproof | Porous, may need sealing |
| Flexibility | Can be cut to fit curves and corners | Rigid, difficult to shape on site |
For most interior feature walls and many exterior facades, PU stone delivers the visual result of natural stone at a fraction of the weight, cost and installation time. Natural stone remains the choice where authentic quarry material is required for structural or high-end architectural reasons.
